Summit Hall is a small fortress monastery of the Order of Knights of Samular – a group dedicated to Tyr – god of justice. The Knights of Samular was formed by Samular Caradoon, paladin of Tyr, hero of the second troll wars (940-952 DR – ended 539 years ago). Summit Hall is run by the greying, but stern matriarch Lady Ushien Stormbanner. It is situated on the Southern slopes of the Sumber Hills overlooking the Dessarin Road that connects Womford to Beliard.
The party is welcomed by the Knights and given board and lodging. The monastic life is military, highly regimented and austere. They party is shown around observing dozens of Knights, monks and novices engaged in training and exercises – armed and ready for battle. Malcor and Geth are particularly struck by ancient images on the great hall walls of Samular Caradoon fighting alongside his older brother Renwick Caradoon, a wizard.
Lady Ushien was expecting the delegation from distant Mirabar, but says that they never arrived at Summit Hall. The delegation included an honour guard for the body of a notable member of the order, Ser Narl Elrok, who had fallen in a battle against Trolls far to the North. His body was being returned to Summit Hall for burial in the ancient tomb beneath the fortress as per the Order’s tradition to repatriate fallen knights ever since Samular Caradoon himself was buried there.
The Order is concerned about increased orc activity in the hills and woodlands to the North East and had increased watch and patrols, but could not be everywhere at once given how few in number they are. They had assumed that the delegation had fallen foul of orcs or bandits. They had sent patrols North along the road to Beliard, but had not found any sign. The Order’s relative lack of trackers and people skilled in wilderness survival precluded them from investigating too far from the road itself. They did determine that the delegation had left Beliard, but not where they had disappeared to from there.
Lady Ushien assigned the party to Ser Roland to act as a guide on the road North and as a messenger should they need support in their efforts to find the delegation.
The weather closed in on the road North towards Beliard, making it near impossible to track. The party encountered a merchant heading South who confirmed that he’d passed the caravan on the road to Summit Hall. Also that the animated armour that followed them was The Watchful Knight that had stood dormant in the inn in Beliard until it had disappeared some years ago. The party reached Beliard and waited until clearer weather, whereupon they turned back South, tracking carefully along both sides of the road.
