During the night, the party is visited by an unusual group of wolves led by a great black dire wolf. Thursh explains, to an incredulous group, that the black dire wolf is his father – raising him from a babe to be the half-man he is today. The wolf seems capable of selective mind-speech and appears intelligent. Perhaps the party has allies that could aid against the dark surrounding them?
The alpha wolf explains (via Thursh) that the pack has observed orcs in numbers pushing into civilised areas to the East of the road from Summit Hall to Beliard. The disturbed weather and orc raids were causing real problems for the scattered farmsteads and were even forcing a response from the elves in the High Forest beyond.
Janner is entranced by the whole mystical nature of the visitation, which brings the woodland-loving gnome some relief from the pressure of human-scale concerns and cloud of gloom that hovered over the party.
